Diesel wastegate actuator: glow-plug light, P132A / P132B, limp

Why the glow-plug light flashes, why key-off-and-on is only a stay of execution, and why carbon in the wastegate is the real fault.

On the 2.0d and 2.2d the turbo is exhaust-driven. The wastegate dumps excess exhaust around the turbine so boost cannot run away. An actuator — vacuum or electric — opens and closes that gate on the ECU’s command.

Soot packs the gate. It starts to stick. The actuator motor works against a seized valve, cooks the driver MOSFETs, and the ECU loses boost control. Typical trail:

  • P132A / P132B
  • Flashing glow-plug lamp
  • Limp mode, boost cut

Why key-off-and-on “fixes” it

The fault often appears only in one actuator position. A restart parks it somewhere it can still move. As the carbon thickens, the trick works less often, then not at all.

What to do

Unbolt the actuator and see if the motor still turns. Move the wastegate arm by hand. If it is stiff, clean it. The lasting job is the turbo off the car and a proper clean. Replacing the actuator alone on a seized gate cooks the new one.
