Petrol Fuel Pump And Sender

Two-wheel-drive cars have a single pump and gauge sender on the right of the tank. All-wheel-drive cars carry two units: pump and sender on the right, transfer pump on the left, joined by cross-over pipes inside the tank. Depressurise first (W-460). Empty or nearly empty tank before the modules come out; tank removal is W-463.

Jaguar lock-ring tool 310-072A (large box with teeth for the ring slots) is worth hiring. A drift or big pliers can turn the ring, but the proper tool keeps it square. An assistant helps with the float arm and pipes.

2WD Module

With the tank clear or the under-seat grommet open for access, unplug the top-plate pipes (squeeze the lugs or use the clip style from W-460). Turn the lock ring anti-clockwise, lift the top plate, rotate the pump and sender slightly anti-clockwise and lift it clear without bending the spring-loaded float arm. Discard the aperture seal; fit a new one on the way back. Lock ring torque is 70 Nm. Align the arrow on the top plate with the mark on the tank before the ring goes home.

Sender only: free the cable ties, unplug top plate and pump, unclip the level sensor from the housing. At full float travel resistance was about 156 ohm; empty about 15.8 ohm.

4WD Modules

Same ring and seal rules on both sides. Lift the right-hand pump with the cross-over pipes guided through the aperture. The left-hand unit is the transfer pump; disconnect its cross-over pipes when the module is high enough, then discard that seal too. Sender resistances match the 2WD figures.

If the pump runs on a fused jumper at the tank but not from the key, chase the relay and the loom chafe above the rear axle in A-088 before you buy another module.
