Rules For Every Bulb

A lamp that was just on is hot. Clean metal between bulb and holder before you fit the new one. Bayonet pins must sit hard on the live contacts. Match the rating exactly. Halogen and fog glass: hold with a tissue; skin oil blackens the glass and shortens life. Wipe accidental fingerprints with methylated spirit.

Exterior Wattages

• Side repeater: 5 W capless.
• Direction indicator: 21 W PY.
• Front fog: 55 W H11 (bulb and holder usually one piece).
• Front sidelight: 5 W capless.
• Halogen dip and main: 55 W H1 each.
• Xenon dip: D2-S; halogen main still 55 W H1.
• High-level stop: LED unit; renew the whole lamp if it fails.
• Number plate: 5 W capless.
• Rear fog: 21 W.
• Reverse: 21 W.
• Stop/tail: 21/5 W.
• Tail: 5 W capless.

Interior Wattages

• Front interior: 5 W capless.
• Reading: 5 W festoon.
• Interior (other): 5 W capless.
• Footwell: 5 W capless.
• Vanity: 3 W festoon.
• Glovebox: 5 W capless.
• Instruments: LED (cluster renew if dead).
• Luggage: 5 W festoon.
• Rear courtesy: 5 W festoon.

Getting At Common Lamps

Halogen main or dip: left-hand main often needs the battery out for space. Twist off the plastic rear cap, release the spring clip, pull the bulb, unplug. Xenon dip: battery negative off first for the high voltage, headlamp unit out, igniter anti-clockwise, then the bulb retaining ring.

Front sidelight: after the main-beam bulb path, pull the small holder from the reflector, then the capless bulb.

Front indicator: under the dip-beam rear cap, twist the holder anti-clockwise; bayonet bulb in the holder.

Wing side repeater: push the lens forward, pull the rear edge out, twist the lens off the holder, pull the capless bulb. Mirror-mounted repeater: glass or cover off, pull the holder, pull the bulb.

Front fog: raise the front, splash shield under the radiator off, unplug, twist the integral bulb/holder anti-clockwise.

Saloon rear cluster: boot side carpet off, clips release the bulbholder board, twist each bayonet bulb. Indicator pins are offset and only fit one way. Estate: corner luggage panel screws, then twist holders from the lamp.

Number plate: compress the spring clip, prise the lens, pull the capless bulb.

Cabin: overhead console prises down at the front for the front lights; footwell lens at the door base or a twist holder in the footwell; rear courtesy lens down at the rear edge then the festoon off the contacts; luggage unit prises out, festoon in the holder; glovebox capless pulls from its holder; vanity festoon in the sunvisor lamp.
