Water Pump Removal And Refitting
Petrol cover or full housing from the left-hand front. Diesel pump via the PAS pump, and why that job also belongs with the timing-belt kit in A-301.
Shared Start
Cooling precautions first, then drain into a clean pan if the mix is staying. New gaskets and O-rings every time; old paper does not seal twice.
Petrol: Cover Or Housing
The pump lives at the left-hand front and takes a short belt off the camshaft. For the impeller cover alone: belt off, three bolts and the drive pulley off, then the cover and impeller bolts, gasket discarded. For the full housing: belt off, tensioner bolt out, front cylinder-head cover off, pulley off again, expansion-tank outlet hose off the housing, inlet and outlet pipes unbolted with their seals discarded, five housing bolts out, gasket discarded.
Diesel: Pump On The Block
On the 2.0d and 2.2d the coolant pump bolts to the left-hand front of the block and is driven through the power-steering pump splines. That is an in-car strip: air cleaner off, EGR cooler and valve tube work with new gaskets, PAS pipe bracket at the left-hand end of the head, PAS belt cover off, square drive in the tensioner hole turned clockwise to slip the PAS belt (mark running direction if the belt is going back on), PAS support bracket off, PAS pump unbolted from the water pump and set aside, hoses freed, pump-to-block bolts out (note any harness clipped on those bolts), pump eased out far enough to free the last hose, gasket discarded. The oil-temperature control thermostat unbolts from the pump housing; renew its O-ring.
Treat a diesel water-pump renewal as a timing-belt job as well. The belt and pump are sold and timed together; leaving a tired pump behind means another teardown when it weeps. The belt-and-pump kit procedure is in article A-301.
Refitting
Clean faces, new seals lightly greased where an O-ring sits, bolts to the specified torque where your data gives one. Refill and burp the cooling system, then watch for weeps at idle and after a short drive.
