Turbocharger Removal Notes

Oil feed and return, variable vanes, intercooler path, new gaskets. The charger is part of the exhaust manifold; full strip is a separate engine job.

What It Is

Exhaust spins the turbine; the compressor on the same shaft packs the inlet. Between charger and manifold the charge runs through an intercooler at the front of the car so denser air reaches the cylinders. Boost is held by a variable-vane set in the turbine housing: vacuum actuator up to VIN E25781, electric motor after that. Sticky vanes and dead actuators are covered in A-017.

Oil Feed

A dedicated pressure feed oils the shaft; the shaft rides on an oil film. Return oil drains to the sump through its own pipe. Late oil changes or thin oil leave carbon on the shaft and kill the turbo. After a hard run, idle for a few minutes before shutdown so the shaft is still fed while it spins down. Do not blip the throttle and kill the key. On a cold start, give oil a few seconds before you load it.

Gaskets And Access

On this engine the turbo is built into the exhaust manifold assembly. Taking the pair off the head is an in-car engine procedure, not a five-minute bay job. Whenever the joint is opened, fit new manifold and oil-pipe gaskets and clean the faces. Do not run the engine with the compressor or turbine open: a dropped object into the wheel wrecks the charger and can leave the bay.

These notes are for safe handling and oil discipline. They are not a full removal sequence.
