Petrol Fuel Precautions And Depressurise

Plastic tank under the rear seats, in-tank pump, SFI on 95 RON. Kill pressure before any union: fuse run-down, crack on a rag, or Schrader on the right of the rail.

What You Are Working On

Petrol X-Types carry a plastic tank under the body beneath the rear seats, an electric pump inside that tank, steel and hose lines to the rail, and sequential multi-point injection (SFI). Minimum fuel is 95 RON unleaded. Idle sits at 725 ± 50 rpm under ECM control. The exhaust side is hot enough to burn skin on brief contact, and the cats run hotter still.

Do not brush the ECM connector pins. Static can wreck the module. On 2.5 and 3.0 the throttle is drive-by-wire; leave the housing alone unless the job calls for it.

Why Pressure Must Go First

Rail, injectors, pump outlet and the lines between them stay pressurised after the key is off. Opening a dry union sprays fuel. Depressurise before you disturb any of those parts. Even after a drain, some petrol remains in the pipes, so treat every open end as live fuel.

Three Ways To Drop Pressure

  • Pump fuse: ignition off, pull the fuel pump fuse, crank until the engine dies, then a couple more turns on the starter. Refit the fuse when the job is finished.
  • Crack a union: catch tin underneath, large rag around the joint, ease the nut slowly so the spray is caught, not thrown.
  • Schrader on the rail: plastic cap on the right-hand end of the fuel rail. Jaguar tool JD209 depresses the valve core like a tap; a gauge can sit on the same fitting.

Plug every open pipe. After any partial drain the first restart needs several seconds of cranking while the pump rebuilds pressure. White quick-release collars are feed; red are return. Another coupling style uses a plastic clip you prise out; renew the O-rings and push the clip flush on reassembly.
