Box Off

Pull the oil dipstick, take the filler cap, and lift the plastic engine cover off its mounts. Unplug the mass air flow sensor. Slack the clamp and pull the outlet hose. At the rear of the box disconnect any wiring plugs that are fitted and the vacuum hose underneath. Free the intake pipe assembly at the front of the cleaner. Lift the whole housing straight up so the pegs leave the rubber grommets.

Grommets And Refit

Check the grommets. Cracked or collapsed ones let unfiltered air past the element and upset MAF readings; renew them. Refit is the reverse: pegs fully seated, clamps tight, every plug locked, cover and dipstick back.

Element Only

For a service change you do not need the box out. Screws out of the lid, lid up, element out noting which way it faced, housing wiped. Oily or filthy paper gets renewed. Moderately dusty paper can be blown clean if you are mid-interval. Arrows for airflow point into the engine, rearwards on this layout.
