Rear subframe corrosion: 340-car survey
Where it starts, how far it usually goes, and the points a tester reaches for first.
The rear subframe on the X400 rusts at the front mount towers and along the forward crossmember. In a 340-car owner survey the first perforation is almost always the driver’s-side front mount, then the passenger side, then the trailing-arm pickups.
A tester’s torch goes to those mounts first. Surface scale is treatable. A hole you can put a screwdriver through is a weld or a second-hand subframe, not a can of cavity wax. UK and TR winter cars fail earlier than dry-state cars; the pattern is the same.
Jacking points are on the subframe. A jack pad on a thin tower will fold it. Use a beam.
