Buying inspection: fifteen checks before you hand over money
Ordered by the cost of getting them wrong. Subframe, transfer case, cambelt paper, sunroof drains.
- Rear subframe mounts — holes here are a four-figure weld.
- Transfer-case whine, 40–60 mph, AWD only.
- Diesel timing-belt paperwork, date and miles.
- Passenger footwell — wet BCM.
- Sunroof drains, four corners of the headlining.
- Coolant in the V6 — mayonnaise or a crusted header tank.
- Automatic: slips on the 3–4, burnt fluid.
- Tyre brands and sizes, all four the same rolling radius.
- Front lower-arm rear bushes.
- Glow-plug light that returns after a restart (wastegate).
- Service book versus invoices. Stickers lie.
- Boot floor and spare well, estate especially.
- Headlining glue above the rear seats, 2004–2006.
- Scan for stored codes, not just the lamp.
- A drive on a poor road, not a ring road.
