Diesel Auxiliary Drivebelts
Main multi-rib on the right for alternator and air-con. Second belt on the left of the inlet cam for PAS and the water pump. Automatic tensioners, no manual tweak.
Two Belts
The main belt is a flat multi-rib on the right-hand end of the engine. It takes the alternator and the air-conditioning compressor from the crank pulley. A separate multi-rib belt drives the power-steering pump and the water pump from the left-hand end of the inlet camshaft.
Main routing, in order around the loop: idler, tensioner, idler, air-con pulley, belt, crank, alternator. The small PAS/pump belt runs tensioner, camshaft pulley, PAS pulley.
Inspection
Engine off, top cover off, the small round belt cover on the right (one nut). For a proper look at the ribs, the right-hand front wheel off and the lower splash shield off. Torch, rotate the engine on the crank bolt with a spanner, inspect the full length both sides: cracks, ribs missing, glaze, shine. Twist it and feel the back. Automatic tensioners, there is no adjustment. Slack, noise, or a dead tensioner means a new belt.
A cooling leak often leaves a white or antifreeze-coloured crust next to the weep. Catch that while the shields are off.
